ABOUT YOUR ACTIVATION ARCHITECT
Amanda Sancen
The Origin Story
My mom always joked that I could find a new best friend just walking through the grocery store… and she wasn't wrong. That curiosity is exactly why I’m a Type-A Virgo who is perpetually in "host mode." I’m obsessed with the invisible dialogue between people and their environments—how the "pulse" of a room dictates whether you feel like a guest or an outsider. We don’t just walk through spaces; we’re shaped by them. At Activate 313, I don’t just "curate"; I’m building the stage where community actually happens.
My Boot’s on the Ground Background
My foundation in interior design and visual merchandising taught me early on that a space is never just "four walls." I’ve lived the full retail spectrum—from high-stakes, overnight resets that transformed an entire floor by sunrise, to styling boutique windows that acted as a "hello" to the neighborhood. I learned how to use a space to pull people in and, more importantly, how to drive revenue by making them want to stay.
My shift to “Soulful” Logistics
That philosophy got real during my decade in the wedding and private event world. When you’re trusted with the biggest day of someone’s life, you learn that the best design is the stuff you can’t see. It’s the flow, the vibe, and that "undeniable feeling" of belonging. I bring that same level of obsessive care to every placemaking square foot I touch. I’m here to turn "wasted square footage" into vibrant activations where our community can thrive, connect, and grow.
Public Placemaking
I’ve put this "experience architecture" to the test in my work managing Downtown District Events in Dearborn. I’ve handled it all—from large-scale vendor markets and cultural celebrations to massive holiday activations that draw thousands. Scaling a project from 50 people to 5,000 takes more than just a spreadsheet; it takes the ability to manage complex, "hair-on-fire" logistics while keeping the environment warm and welcoming.
But I don't just "do"—I teach. I’m passionate about helping others understand how to actually activate public space, whether that’s mastering grassroots outreach or coordinating a small army of contracted event support. My goal is always the same: keep the human experience at the center of the chaos and give you the blueprint to do it again.
The Entrepreneurial Heartbeat
My drive to see small businesses thrive isn't just professional—it’s personal. It started with watching my mom navigate the wild, rewarding world of her own photography business. Being by her side was my very first job. Whether I was hauling equipment or managing things on-site, I saw the grit and pride it takes to build something from scratch. That’s where I learned the value of a true partnership, and it’s why I’m so fired up about helping founders and community organizations build futures that actually last through events and activations.
The ACTIVATE 313 Mission
Through Activate 313, I’m channeling a career expertise into a curated suite of services. I’m not here to just "hand over resources" and walk away. I curate activations that empower you to do your best work and foster high-impact connections with your audience. Basically? I build the stage, you bring the vision, and together, we make it a destination.

As a resident of Southwest Detroit, I’m constantly inspired by the grit and grace of my neighborhood—it’s the culture, the people, and the local shops that keep me curious about what makes a community truly thrive."
